If the idea of driving a boat sounds intimidating, take a breath — pontoons are about the friendliest, most forgiving boats on the water. They're wide, stable, and slow-moving by design, which is exactly why families love them and why they're a great first rental.

Plenty of the people who launch from our dock at 200 Seminole St have never captained anything bigger than a golf cart. By the time they idle back in at the end of the day, they're already planning the next trip. This guide walks you through what to expect so you can book with confidence.

A few simple requirements keep everyone safe. Whoever drives the boat needs to be at least 25 years old. And anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 who plans to take the helm needs a Florida Boating Safety Education ID Card — a quick online temporary certificate does the trick, and we'll point you to it.

We do ask that self-drive renters have at least a little prior boating experience, since the Gulf and its channels reward a confident hand. If that's not you or your group, there's an easy fix in the next section.

Everyone aboard gets a Coast Guard-approved life jacket, and we'll make sure you have the right sizes for kids before you leave the dock.

You'll never be handed the keys and waved off. Before you leave, we walk you through the boat: how to start it, how to trim the motor, how to work the throttle, how to anchor, and what the gauges are telling you. We'll cover the basic navigation markers and point you toward the calm, easy water to start with.

It's a relaxed, no-pressure rundown, and there are no silly questions. Ask us anything — that's what the orientation is for. Most first-timers feel noticeably calmer once they've idled away from the dock and realized how manageable it all is.

For a first outing, you don't need to go far to have an incredible day. The Clearwater Harbor sandbars are just 10 to 15 minutes from the dock — shallow, protected, and perfect for getting comfortable at the helm before you ever touch open water.

Anchor up in waist-deep water, let the kids splash, and keep an eye out for the wild bottlenose dolphins that cruise through almost daily. Once you've got your sea legs, One Tree Island and the calmer stretches near Caladesi and Honeymoon Island are natural next steps. There's no rush and no wrong choice.

Here's the honest truth: sometimes the best move is to not drive at all. If nobody in your group meets the age or license requirements, if you'd simply rather relax with a drink in hand, or if you're celebrating something and want everyone off the clock, add a licensed captain.

A captain handles the driving, the anchoring, and the local know-how — where the dolphins are, which sandbar is best that day, how to read the tide. You get all the fun and none of the responsibility. For a lot of first-timers, it turns a slightly nervous day into a completely carefree one.

Boating has a few unwritten courtesies that are easy to pick up. Keep your speed down near swimmers, sandbars, and other anchored boats. Give wildlife plenty of room — never chase dolphins, and let them approach you. And carry out whatever you carry in so the islands stay as pretty as you found them.

Watch your wake, too. Slowing down as you pass smaller boats, kayakers, and shorelines is both polite and, in many spots, the law. None of it is complicated, and we'll go over the essentials during your orientation.
